Ilona J. Frieden, MD, FAAP, FAAD : Professor of Dermatology and Pediatrics, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Dermatology, founder of the UCSF Birthmarks and Vascular Anomalies Center . She is past-President of the Society for Pediatric Dermatology, president-elect of the American Board of Dermatology, and responsible for creating the first Pediatric Dermatology Board Certification Examination to be given in October, 2004. She has a long-standing interest in vascular birthmarks, particularly hemangiomas and is founder of the Hemangioma Investigator Group. She is member of the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies and currently serves on its Scientific Committee, has published and lectured widely about vascular anomalies and is an international authority in the field.

She lectures nationally and internationally on these topics.

The VAC is composed of a core multi-disciplinary team of 7 physicians and 1 nurse practitioner who collaborate in the evaluation, management, and emotional support of children with vascular lesions. Currently, there is one interdisciplinary clinic held each month. This offers the convenience of having patients seen by more than one specialist during the same visit and allows physicians to share their assessments and concerns with one another as well as with patients and family members. Dr. J. Stuart Nelson, M.D., Ph.D. is Medical Director of the Beckman Laser Institute and Medical Clinic, and Professor of Surgery, Dermatology and Biomedical Engineering at the University of California-Irvine. Dr. Nelson has published more than 280 scientific articles and 13 book chapters on lasers and light-based therapies. Dr. Nelson served as president of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) 2001-2002 and assumed the position of editor-in-chief of the ASLMS journal Lasers in Surgery and Medicine in April 2005. Dr. Nelson and colleagues developed the "Dynamic Cooling Device" which is used in conjunction with pulsed dye lasers to treat port wine stains, Hemangioma and other hypervascular skin lesions.

In 1997 Duke Univeristy founded the DUMC Hemangioma Clinic. In 2005 the DUMC VAC closed its doors. As of June 2006 they have not re-established a multidisciplinary clinic at DUMC. Indivdual doctors are seeing patients and treatment is still occuring. NOVA is in communication with many of these physicians and if a VAC is opened we will let you know.
