The treatment of a hemangioma is based upon the location of the lesion, the stage of growth, the presence or potential for complications and the emotional and psychological needs of the patient and family.
Most hemangioma do not cause any medical concern Therefore; in most cases observation is the optimal course of action to follow.
Hemangioma should be evaluated by a physician with experience in the diagnosis and treatment of hemangioma in the first few weeks of life. It may be photographed, measured and evaluated for complications. A family history of vascular anomalies may be reviewed.
If the hemangioma is not causing any concern follow-up every 4-6 weeks with a physician experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of hemangioma is reasonable. If a parent notes any changes, including rapid growth, ulceration or pain they should contact the physician immediately.
